WebBy these rules, a 30 maxHP character at 30HP will die upon taking 60+ damage in one hit. A 30 maxHP character who has been reduced to 10HP will die upon taking 40+ damage in one hit. Although, as a DM who goes outside rules a bit, if you think about the general physical meaning of 30 damage, I would likely say that they would die.
